What China was like.
It took us 4 years to get to China and meet Kublai Khan. Since it was the summer time, Kublai was staying a palace that was named Xanadu. It was grand, big, extravagant, nothing like I've ever seen before. My mouth dropped and in that moment I thought to myself "Those hard four years of travel were so worth it".
My family and I had planned to only be in China for a few years, but we were gone from Venice for over 23 years. I had written down all my travels of the far east. Soon enough my "book of travels" got very popular; famous actually. But no one believed that I traveled that far because aside from the book there was no real evidence; so I was a laughing stock.
Since we were there for so long, we've earned great respect from Kublai Khan. My father and uncle got important positions in the leader's court. Since I was so dedicated and engaged in the Chinese culture, I soon mastered the language. Not only was I able to communicate with everyone, but I too earned great respect from Kublai Khan and got a job as a special envoy.
